The term "virtual event" can be divided into different types. It is used to describe events with an entire program or certain components designed and implemented virtually. To give you an overview, we want to present you the four main types of virtual events.

Categories of Virtual Events

  • Webinars/Online seminars

Webinars or online seminars offer their participants the opportunity to listen to speakers from all over the world or even to participate. The webinars are conducted using video conferencing tools that allow speakers and participants to ask questions and provide answers, hold live presentations or include videos that are available to participants as on-demand versions after the webinar.

Components of this main type can also be online streaming, i.e. the transmission and playback of video and audio data via a computer network, or broadcast.

  • Virtual conferences

Similar to personal conferences, which you know from your everyday work in the office, virtual conferences offer your participants an even wider range of opportunities to participate and interact. The program of virtual conferences is usually complex and lively and consists of several keynotes and breakouts. Virtual "roundtables", i.e. discussion groups that take place live and independent of the venue, are also part of virtual conferences. Another aspect of virtual conferences are "Virtual Learning" session, in which learning content is played back live and course participants can actively participate in the training or class.

  • Internal Hybrid Events

These include all internal events that are partly personal and partly virtual. An example is an event for the purpose of sharing important communication by a large company with locations spanning several countries. The CEO invites all the company's employees in one online place, allowing him to inform and interact with everyone without having to fly all the employees to the company's headquarters.

  • External hybrid events

Events of this type are characterized by the fact that they are hybrid, i.e. online and offline, and are primarily designed for external participants. These can be video conferencing for a specific series of lectures, workshops open to external participants or yoga sessions. The participants can switch live to the event, listen, participate or learn without having to travel to the event.
